– And as time was up
00:02
and she turned in her Contracts final exam,
00:05
she realized she was in the wrong law class
00:07
and she had done the wrong final (gasps).
00:10
Today, we’re talking about real life
00:12
law school horror stories.
00:14
(imitates ghost)
00:15
Scary.
00:17
(light music)
00:21
Hey, legal eagles.
00:22
D. James Stone here teaching you how to think like a lawyer
00:25
so you can crush law school.
00:28
Law school can be a really scary place.
00:30
It’s three years long, and in that time, a lot can go wrong.
00:35
So I thought I’d share some of the scariest things
00:37
that actually happened to me in law school.
00:40
So let’s dig in to some of these scary stories.
00:43
One of the first things that happens
00:45
when you get to law school
00:47
is that you are surrounded by some of the smartest people
00:49
you’ve ever met in your entire life.
00:52
I don’t really care which law school it is.
00:53
You’re gonna be surrounded by A type personalities.
00:57
And some of those people are what are called gunners.
01:00
Gunners are the people that always raise their hand,
01:03
they always seem to have the answer.
01:05
And when you first get to law school,
01:07
they can seem really intimidating
01:09
because people don’t like to answer
01:11
the professor’s questions.
01:13
So I had a few gunners in my class.
01:16
Hopefully, I was not one of those gunners,
01:20
even though I liked to answer on occasion.
01:22
But there was one particular gunner in my class.
01:28
For the sake of anonymity, let’s call him Alan.
01:31
Alan was hardcore.
01:33
He would answer every professor’s question.
01:36
He had a background in mathematics and philosophy.
01:41
So he was able to talk about the philosophical underpinnings
01:46
of different legal doctrines,
01:49
he was able to think logically,
01:52
and he always seemed to have the answer.
01:55
So after your first semester,
01:58
you are given a slip of paper with your grades in it,
02:03
and I happened to be sitting behind Alan in class,
02:07
in between classes when we were getting
02:09
our grades for the first time.
02:11
Basically, you open up a slip of paper
02:13
and that’s your report card.
02:15
And I happened to see that he got all Cs his first semester.
02:21
I was shocked.
02:22
I had never seen anything like it.
02:23
One of, if not the smartest person in class got all Cs.
02:29
Let it be a lesson to you
02:30
that, just because someone is very good in class
02:33
and seems to be one of the smartest people in the room,
02:36
it doesn’t mean they’re gonna get good grades in law school.
02:38
And this person eventually became a friend of mine,
02:42
but man, it was quite a shock to see that this person,
02:47
who seemed to know all the answers,
02:50
got straight Cs his first semester.
02:53
Another horror story that happened to me
02:55
relates to my mock trial competition.
02:59
I was on the mock trial team
03:00
for all three years in law school.
03:02
It was one of the best experiences that I had.
03:06
Mock trial is where you pretend to be a lawyer,
03:09
you conduct a trial, and you are scored by judges
03:12
based on how well you do.
03:14
It’s just like mock trial in high school and college.
03:18
And part of the mock trial competition
03:21
is traveling to different cities.
03:23
Well, one of the competitions was held in Las Vegas.
03:28
In fact, it was one of the national finals
03:32
for this pariticular mock trial competition.
03:34
And after my team had done their round
03:39
and we had actually conducted a round
03:41
in front of a real judge
03:43
who actually tried cases in Las Vegas,
03:47
the mock trial judge started to brag
03:50
to my team and the other team
03:53
about what happened one night
03:55
when a burglar tried to break into his house.
03:59
So this sitting judge regaled us for about 15 minutes
04:03
about how an intruder tried to break into his house
04:07
and what he did with this intruder.
04:09
Well apparently, to hear this judge tell the tale,
04:13
he sat the intruder down on a chair,
04:16
tied him up, put him in a small bathroom,
04:20
and then for the next hour or two,
04:22
proceeded to threaten him with a gun to his head
04:27
and told him never to come back to his house.
04:30
I’m guessing that, if that actually happened,
04:33
that that burglar never burgled that guy’s house again.
04:38
And this is, again, a sitting judge.
04:40
I don’t know if that’s a true story or not.
04:42
This was Vegas, after all, so I probably believe
04:46
that this judge is an insane person
04:48
who threatened a burglar with a firearm.
04:53
So that was an interesting experience.
04:55
Another horror story that happened to me
04:59
was that, when I was sitting for the California Bar Exam,
05:04
it was at a hotel in West L.A.
05:08
Not just in the regular part of the hotel,
05:10
but three floors down in the basement.
05:14
And this was a huge cavern.
05:16
I mean there must have been 500 people, at least,
05:18
sitting for this exam.
05:20
And so, on day one of the exam,
05:22
we were into the second essay portion of the Bar Exam,
05:27
and all of a sudden, as what happens in California,
05:32
everything started to shake.
05:33
There was an earthquake.
05:35
I later learned that it was over a 5.0 on the Richter scale.
05:40
So it was enough to get the chandeliers
05:43
in the basement to swing back and forth.
05:46
And all of the people who were not native Californians
05:50
hid under their desk and were shaken,
05:55
literally and figuratively,
05:58
and they lost some crucial time on the Bar Exam.
06:02
I and the rest of the native Californians
06:05
just simply couldn’t be bothered
06:07
and carried along writing our essays.
06:10
I actually feel that that gave me an advantage
06:12
on the Bar Exam because I think the people from out of town
06:15
were a little bit frazzled,
06:18
whereas, being a native Southern Californian,
06:21
it was just a normal Tuesday afternoon for me.
06:26
So I give partial credit to the earthquake
06:28
for helping me pass the California Bar Exam.
06:32
Another horror story that happened to me
06:35
was that my computer crashed right before finals.
06:40
So this was over 11 or 12 years ago.
06:44
So this was back in the day
06:46
when computers didn’t have solid-state hard drives
06:49
and Dropbox and Google Drive did not exist.
06:53
So I was relying on the files
06:58
that were physically residing on my computer
07:01
and my hard drive just stopped working.
07:04
There were clear signs that something was going wrong,
07:08
so I had the wherewithal to transfer
07:11
some of these files to, I don’t know,
07:14
a floppy disk or a Zip drive
07:16
or maybe I burned it to a CD.
07:18
I’m not sure, but I was able to get my notes
07:21
off of the computer probably about 45 minutes
07:24
before the thing just stopped and never started up again.
07:27
So I got really lucky.
07:29
It still was very frazzling.
07:31
I lost a lot of files just before finals
07:35
in my second year of law school.
07:38
But that’s why I am very adamant
07:40
to current and future law students
07:43
to always use cloud services, backup your files.
07:48
There’s a chance that you will never get them back.
07:51
Laptops fail.
07:52
They’re stolen all the time.
07:54
You never know when your computer’s going to crash
07:57
and you can bet that it’s probably going to happen
08:00
at the worst possible time.
08:02
So do yourself a favor and backup your crucial files.
08:06
And my final law school horror story
08:08
is that, after three years of law school,
08:11
over six semesters, I graduated with over $160,000 in debt.
08:19
Yeah.
08:21
That’s more than a lot of people’s houses cost.
08:23
That’s three BMWs’ worth of debt.
08:27
And that was over 10 years ago.
08:29
Now, law school tuition has gone up even more,
08:31
so I really feel for all the current law students
08:35
that are out there who are racking up law school debt.
08:37
It’s crazy.
08:38
It’s everyone’s personal horror story.
08:41
It took me years to pay it off
08:43
and it really impacted my quality of life.
08:45
I don’t regret going to law school,
08:47
but all of the debt that you accumulate
08:49
really does build up and, man, it’s tough.
08:54
So those were just a few of the horror stories
08:57
that I personally experienced in law school.
